Grass is the most important crop to the livestock sector in Wales. It underpins the livestock industry giving Welsh agriculture a key competitive advantage against many other livestock production regions across the globe.
Grass is the cheapest feed farmers can grow and is a high-quality feed for sheep and cattle. Improving grassland management effectively is a key driver of profitability on beef and sheep farms with each additional tonne of dry matter utilised per hectare worth £204 per annum. Therefore, improvements in grazing management will help increase quality and quantity of grass grown, optimise livestock growth rates and improve the carrying capacity of land.
