Farming has faced a challenging winter and continued wet weather has presented many challenges for the industry, some of which are expected to have an impact on the coming winter and autumn including the harvest.
In order to help the industry prepare for the challenges ahead, Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) is hosting a joint webinar with The Farming Community Network and LHP Accountants to discuss what steps farmers can take now to prepare for the winter ahead.
The webinar will be held on Wednesday 26 June at 7pm and is open to all.
Joining the webinar are The Farming Community Network Cymru, Wales Manager, Linda Jones who will address how farmers can keep themselves mentally and physically fit and well to address the challenging times ahead; LHP Accountants, William Howell senior agricultural accountant within the Agriculture team, will discuss practical solutions to help deal with challenging financial situations on farm and HCC’s Industry Development Executive James Ruggeri will address how to best guard against and prepare for wet winters with land and livestock in mind.
Speaking ahead of the virtual event, James Ruggeri said:
“The past winter and spring have presented the industry with some steep challenges. Many were not able to apply fertilizer to their fields in the way have done before due to sodding wet grounds, which will in turn have an impact on silage and grass growth. Other have faced issues such as Schmallenberg in their flocks and overall, the winter has had stretched many to their mental capacity.
“Whilst we can’t control the weather, or disease issues such as Schmallenberg during lambing time, there are ways we can prepare for the next season.
“We want to see a resilient farming industry and HCC alongside FCN and LHP Accountants will discuss what practical steps can be taken to ensure we are well prepared for the coming winter season. I hope many of you can join us on the night.”
Linda Jones added: “Building resilience is a frequently used term in farming. But what does that mean to the health and wellbeing of farming people? This event will provide information to help farmers recognise their strengths and also highlight areas where they might need some support.”
